First symposium on diversity and inclusion in Nordic puppetry
As part of the 6th edition of SAMPO Festival, Puppet Theatre Sampo organizes a seminar on diversity and inclusion in Nordic puppetry including workshops, keynotes and a discussion.
So far, there has been little discussion about diversity and inclusion in Nordic puppetry and we would like to increase awareness for this important topic. The event will evolve around the following questions: Is there enough diversity among our theatres and themes? How about in education, audiences, venues? Who is our audience? How diverse is our staff? With whom are we working? What are the barriers that might exclude others? And what tools do we use to integrate people with different backgrounds?
The symposium will take place on 24th of August in Helsinki. Professionals from the theatre and performing arts field of all Nordic Countries are to be invited. Our chosen partners are active, well-known, and well-connected in the field of puppetry, children’s culture or performing arts. All partners are already working with the terms of diversity and inclusion but so far there has been no exchange. Therefore, we would like to create a basis for a lively discussion.
We want to raise awareness to the topics of diversity and inclusion in Nordic puppetry and aim to challenge and dismantle possible structures and to make the field more accessible, inclusive and welcoming.
The seminar is open to everyone and free of charge. The workshop has a fee of 10€ and registration is required (info to come).
Workshop
Building bridges: developing international artistic exchanges using digital and analog mediums between schools.
We will explore the different ways to build an international art education program. We will look at the needs of the communities, the platforms used, how to overcome language issues and anything else that may occur during a digital artistic exchange. During our time together we will look at Dear You Art Project and share other existing examples of cross-cultural international artistic exchanges between schools. Participants will also be able to brainstorm and start to develop their own project.
Arlene Tucker is a diversity agent, artist and educator, and her work focuses on adding play elements to daily life through her art. Inspired by translation studies and nature she finds ways to connect and understand our meaning making process in our shared environments. Her process-based artistic work creates spaces and situations for exchange, dialogue, and transformations to occur and surprise all players. She is interested in creating projects that open up ideas and that engage the viewer; that invite the viewer to be a part of the narrative or art creation process. In translation, your participation continues to propel the story.
