Praise to bewilderment in Kolibri? Festivaali - The multicultural festival spreads out over Helsinki, Vantaa, and Espoo 22.9.-1.10.2022

Kolibrí Festivaali is celebrating its 11th edition this year from 22.9. to 1.10 at Sello Library, Lastenkulttuurikeskus Pessi and Annantalo in the Helsinki Metropolitan Area.

Kolibrí encourages creativity, diversity, and inclusion in children's culture. Several workshops, concerts, performances, storytelling sessions, a children's book fair, and exhibition will celebrate bewilderment, all free of charge for children and their families. Let us praise bewilderment as a guide to childhood times, as a link to nature, science, culture, and to the years of learning, teaching, and unlearning in order to return to the state of curious bewilderment.

The invited artists for 2022 are the Mexican illustrator Juan Palomino and the Mexican writer Ana Paula Ojeda. During the festival, they will facilitate creative workshops for children and their families, schools and professional illustrators, writers, and art teachers.

Palomino's work will also be showcased in the exhibition “From Imagination to Imagination”, which will be held at Lastenkulttuurikeskus Pessi (Vantaa) from 23.9. to 15.10. Palomino is a prominent illustrator and has received several prestigious awards, such as the Bologna Children's Book Fair International Prize for Illustration in 2016.

Activities and events for families will take place at Sello Library (Espoo) on Friday, 23.9; Lastenkulttuurikeskus Pessi (Vantaa) on Saturday, 24.9.; and Annantalo (Helsinki) on Saturday, 1.10. Kolibrí’s VI Children's Book Fair, will be held both on 24.9. and 1.10., featuring new and secondhand books in both Spanish and Portuguese.

Kolibrí Festivaali is an interdisciplinary, multicultural, free, and open art festival for the whole family. Kolibrí is the only festival of its kind in the Nordic countries. “Our goal has been to create a space where plurilingual children and families feel safe to express their language and culture. It's important that they learn that their heritage language does not need to be a secret kept behind the doors of their homes" explained Laura Gazzotti, the general producer of the festival.

All are welcome to Kolibrí!
