The 17th edition of Cinemaissí will take place on October 26-30, 2022. This year films will be shown at the Caisa Cultural Center and at Kino Engel in Helsinki. In addition, there will be screenings in Oulu in collaboration with the Oulu-Matagalpa Association and in Tampere in the Arthouse Cinema Niagara.
The films and their themes have been curated by the festival's artistic director Támara Aalto.
Our program this year has a central theme, Hidden Heroes. With it, Cinemaissí pays tribute to all of those who have found themselves in challenging circumstances and have nevertheless fostered strength, resilience, and vulnerability to overcome them. The 9 selected films bring to the front stories of those who have rediscovered their identity, their roots, and who everyday attempt at walking different paths, so the course of history is changed. In addition, our short film session showcases the work of Latin American and Finnish filmmakers based in Finland, tells Támara Aalto.
Festival hits from Latin America
This year's program includes a great collection of films that have attracted attention at international film festivals, which will now have their Finnish premier in Cinemaissí.
The festival will be opened by the Chilean Francisca Alegría's directorial debut A cow who Sang a song into the future (2022), which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival. Visually impressive, the magical realist drama dives deep to the question of the Earth's ecological future and generational traumas.
Cinemaissí will also screen the latest documentary from the legendary Patricio Guzmán My Imaginary Country (2022), which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival. Charming with its gentle gaze, the documentary examines the current political situation of Chile through the protests in 2019. The film's themes will also be discussed in the panel discussion held on October 27. (8 pm., Kulttuurikeskus Caisa), where Chilean economic expert Luis Herrera and University of Helsinki professor of world politics Teivo Teivainen will discuss about the political situation in Chile.
Tengo Sueños eléctricos (2022), directed by Valentina Maurel has attracted great interest internationally with the Pardo for Best Actor, Best Direction and Best Actress awards that it won at the Locarno Film Festival. The Costa Rican drama tells the story of 16-year-old Eva, who desperately wants to find a connection with the father figure she has long missed.
