NCK's Spring Conference: Take a Stand

"Democracy and Participation on Equal Terms." The conference will be held in Östersund, on February 5-6, 2014

They are all around us. The norms that silently decides what´s okay and what´s not. The norms that determine what we perceive as normal. And what we think is anomalous. It has always been like this. But that doesn´t mean that norms are something we should blindly live by. Instead, we should pay attention to them and find ways to detect and tackle them.

The stories are many. In history and today, people have been excluded. Their rights have been denied and they have been suppressed and ridiculed by others. A cultural identity, a functional impairment, sexual orientation and skin colour is all examples of things that have been used to differentiate groups and individuals from each other. But how do we create a democratic society where everyone can participate on equal terms? Is that even possible? And what can and what should a cultural heritage institution take a stand for? How can these institutions actively challenge the norms in our society?

Our spring conference discusses democracy and participation and the courage to take a stand. During two exciting days we present lectures and workshops from well known and skilled experts in the field of culture, cultural heritage, the arts and politics. In addition to this, there will be an opportunity to meet interesting people and experience one or two surprises.

NCK is a Nordic-Baltic centre for learning through cultural heritage. We perceive cultural heritage as a valuable resource that can help us to create a sustainable and inclusive society where learning is a lifelong process.
