Thesis: Equity in Library Services - Cultural inclusivity is part of the services

Nahla Hewidy's thesis for Humak University of Applied Sciences examines the role of libraries in society, particularly their ability to promote inclusivity and diversity.

The research highlights that while Finns are considered a nation of readers, communal reading is not recognized in the same way as individual reading. This affects who the library services are intended for and who feels they belong. For instance, in Roma communities, storytelling and communal activities like handicrafts are integral parts of the culture. These forms of communal reading should be better acknowledged in library services.

Libraries need to adapt to societal changes and offer services that consider the needs of different cultures and minorities. The study shows that inclusivity does not occur naturally but requires active participation and communal planning.

Libraries should also invest in a diverse staff and provide spaces that support both privacy and community.
