Insecure livelihood and lack of occupational health care weaken artists' job satisfaction - young artists' experiences are alarming
The recently published Art and Culture Barometer shows that artists' experience of the meaningfulness of their work is strong, but many uncertainty factors weaken job satisfaction. The majority of artists under the age of 35 who responded were worried about how they will cope with their work.
1,319 artists responded to the Art and Culture Barometer in the fall of 2022. The barometer, produced in collaboration between Taike and Cupore, annually follows up artists' views on current phenomena. This year, the barometer focused on artists' job satisfaction, which has previously only been investigated to a limited extent.
Almost all artists who responded to the barometer survey felt that their work is significant for themselves and believed that their own art has something to offer others as well. However, artists' job satisfaction is burdened by insecure livelihoods and small incomes, competition for grants and their cumbersome applications, and unpaid work.
The Barometer is available in Finnish:
